SIXTY YEARS AGO
Health Minister C.H. Witney announced in the Manitoba legislature that the provincial government will introduce a voluntary comprehensive and pre-paid medical care insurance program, starting July 1, 1967.
A bottling plant with the most modern equipment available will be open shortly in Brandon. Beverage Services Ltd. announced this week that the new plant on Victoria Avenue and 13th Street East would have 38 full-time employees with additional staff added for summer months.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Daily Express of London reported that Princess Margaret and her photographer husband, the Earl of Snowdon, plan to separate.
A crowd of only 100 people showed up at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium to listen to the magic that is Bruce Cockburn. Brandon’s audience was the smallest of Cockburn’s entire Canadian tour.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Episodes involving violence are becoming more frequent in rural Manitoba as more farmers face the financial squeeze. Federal Farm Credit Corp. estimates suggests 3,600 farmers are in danger of losing their farms.
Progressive Conservative Leader Gary Filmon rolled into Brandon last night to rally his troops before the provincial election this week.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Paul Grambo, a Grade 10 Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School student, has won an interactive scholarship from the Associated Manitoba Arts Festival. Grambo, who is a percussionist in two school bands and sings in the choir, will get to spend a weekend studying and working behind the scenes with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
A Canadian Ski Patrol team from Brandon will represent the province in a national first-aid competition. Stan Chorney, Jeremy Fabian and Don Green topped a competition held in La Riviere and earned the right to represent Manitoba in Halifax in May.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry honoured two of their fallen brothers during a public memorial service at CFB Shilo yesterday. A sea of green military fatigues filled the multi-purpose training facility attached to the infantry building. Row upon row of soldiers from 2PPCLI, along with civilians, joined to grieve and say goodbye to Cpl. Paul Davis and Master Cpl. Timothy Wilson, who died as a result of their armoured vehicle colliding with a taxi while on patrol in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on March 2.
This summer, Rick Felstead will become the first person from Brandon in more than a decade to serve as district governor for the 48 Rotary Clubs in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario.
TEN YEARS AGO
Day 2 of the provincial election campaign brought NDP Leader Greg Selinger to Brandon, where he promised to build the city’s first QuickCare Clinic if re-elected. The campaign promise would double the number of QuickCare clinics in Manitoba, from eight to 16. The clinics are open evenings, weekends and holidays and provide followup information to a patient’s family physician.
