FORTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba voters stuck to an established Canadian tradition of keeping the provinces at odds with Ottawa by re-electing a NDP government to balance the federal Progressive Conservative majority. Howard Pawley, Canada’s only NDP premier, defeated Gary Filmon’s Conservatives. The NDP took 30 of the 57 seats, with the Tories capturing 26 and the Liberals winning one.

In Brandon West, Progressive Conservative Jim McCrae won convincingly, picking up 5,520 votes compared to 4,118 for the NDP’s Arnold Grambo. Liberal candidate Kerry Auriat had 758 votes. In Brandon East, NDP candidate Len Evans was re- elected after getting 4,173 votes. Tory candidate Jim Armstrong received 3,184 votes, while Liberal Eileen McFadden picked up 530.

It’s full of history and charm. And quaint is a descriptive word that fits this tearoom beautifully. Most of what has been used to renovate and decorate Teahan’s Corner, located at the corner of First Street and Louise Avenue, which opens next week, after five long months of renovations, has been recycled from old original pieces found in the basement and up in the rafters. Owners Bob and Linda Humphreys were pleased to find so many hidden treasures — treasures that steered the renovations in directions they hadn’t quite planned on.
