Phyliss Jones of Ninga, last year’s Aberdeen Angus queen of the Manitoba Winter Fair, relinquished her post to newly elected queen Lorraine Tolton of Newdale.
Manitoba Pool Elevators is taking steps to eliminate offensive odours at its 18th Street rendering plant, Brandon Mayor S.A. Magnacca said. The mayor said a letter from MPE president W.J. Parker confirmed that equipment will be installed by May 1 to eliminate odours.

J. Harvey Tolton, an exhibitor since before most of the present varieties of grain were introduced, was dominant again in the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair seed show, adding the Manitoba Growers trophy to his collection of awards.
Gerard Raes of Deloraine is the 1976 grand champion in the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair’s egg competition, “Canada’s largest egg show.”

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation residents have elected Kenneth Whitecloud to replace Vince Tacan as chief of the First Nation in a band council election. Whitecloud is the brother of former Sioux Valley chief Katherine Whitecloud, who was recently elected to the Manitoba regional chief position of the Assembly of First Nations.
After a postponed concert a week and a half ago due to a bout of bronchitis, Tanya Tucker returned to Brandon and played to a crowd of about 450 people at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium last night.
TEN YEARS AGO
Hundreds of people gathered in MacGregor to say goodbye to a little boy whose disappearance and tragic death united hearts across the country. They gathered at the MacGregor Sommerfeld Mennonite Church on Wednesday to say goodbye to two-year-old Chase Thomas Martens, whose body was found in a creek after he went missing from his nearby home, north of Austin.
Using its “best guess,” the Bank of Canada predicts the economy will take more than two years to fully adjust to the commodity price shock. Lynn Patterson, the central bank’s deputy governor, said in a speech Wednesday that tumbling oil and other resource prices have translated into losses of about $1,800 for every Canadian.
