SIXTY YEARS AGO
Ten of the toughest and fastest Aberdeen Angus steers in the province took on 20 determined boys in a battle to the finish before a standing-room-only crowd at the Manitoba Winter Fair last night during the calf scramble.
A.R. (Ron) Tolton of Oak Lake sold the highest-selling bred sow in the Manitoba Winter Fair sale. Ed Clark of Saskatchewan paid $310 for Tolton’s top sow, one of a dozen animals sold to buyers in the province to the west. The average price paid for the 71 sows was $214, an average $43 higher than was paid for 53 sows in the spring of 1965.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Ten more doctors practising in Brandon have given notice they wish to opt out of the province’s health-care insurance plan. This brings to 54 the number of doctors in the city who have decide to opt out of the plan.
Thirteen-year-old Bobby Brown of rural Brandon and 11-year-old Christine Berg of Russell were the big winners of the day in the biggest sale of edibles in the history of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. Christine received an even $1,000 for her 24 eggs and Bobby earned $5.75 a pound for his Angus steer carcass.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission has approved an application by Westman Cable TV to beam The Sports Network to rural subscribers at no extra charge, but the service has been refused to viewers in Brandon.
Brandon-area cattlemen walked off with top honours in the prestigious Beef Carcass Competition at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. Murray Hutton won the grand champion carcass, while Brian Kruk of Souris won the reserve champion carcass.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Unit managers at the Brandon General Hospital were notified that their positions are being eliminated. The 15.6 unit manager positions, which translates to 18 people, will be replaced by nine nursing program manager positions.
Three councillors with the RM of Cornwallis are threatening to thwart the budget process, which supplies tax dollars to both the RM and local school divisions.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Two years after the Brandon Hills United Church was destroyed by arson, the congregation will start to rebuild. “We’re going to have our sod-turning ceremony this month,” fundraising committee chairman Bill Couling said last night at a concert to raise money for the construction. Country music star Patricia Conroy and fiddler Allison Granger, who grew up in Brandon and attended the church as a child, performed at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium in support of the rebuilding effort.
Returning to his home province is always a treat for Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Burton Cummings. The former member of the Guess Who, one of Canada’s all-time greatest rock bands, is performing Friday evening in Dauphin to celebrate the opening of the new Credit Union Place — the town’s new concert and sports venue.

The RM of Pipestone is weighing the pros and cons between building a new pool, spray park or golf course clubhouse. Or, whether it makes sense to invest in all three. At a recent public meeting, Pipestone ratepayers got a chance to chime in on prospective plans to increase the quality of life in the area by adding a recreation amenity.
Macoy Erkamps has his National Hockey League entry-level contract. The six-foot, 198-pound defenceman for the Brandon Wheat Kings signed a deal with the Ottawa Senators that was announced on Friday morning.
