SIXTY YEARS AGO

The Keystone Centre, a dream of several years, should begin to take concrete shape by mid-summer.

Norval Brown, a senior chemistry teacher at Vincent Massey High School and the president of the Brandon high school teachers’ union, will receive a minimum of $2,400 to cover expenses while pursuing his master’s degree in high school administration at the University of Alberta campus.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Brandon police today found the body of former city police chief Harry Collister in an area northeast of the city. Collister had been missing since Nov. 28.

Veteran alderman Joe Thomassen has resigned his seat on Brandon City Council because he says he can no longer keep up with the demands of the job.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The record-breaking 107,221 people who visited this year’s Royal Manitoba Winter Fair had organizers crowing with delight yesterday. The 1984 record attendance was a little over 96,000.

Larry Burton of Swan River walked away with the top dollar at the Manitoba Swine Breeders Sale at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. From 13 boars sold for an average of $447. Burton had the highest seller — a Reserve Champion boar that went for $850.

Fans of Canada’s short-necked beer bottles — stubbies — attended an 11-and-a-half-hour, eight-band extravaganza in Montreal to save the stubby at the McGill University student union.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Organizers of Brandon Habitat for Humanity are hoping to build another home this summer on the 700 block of Rosser Avenue East, near the site of last year’s project. But what is needed to give the green light for construction is about $47,000 in cash donations.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon Transit rolled into the future this week, as the city officially introduced smaller, cheaper and more comfortable buses to its fleet. Mayor Dave Burgess said the city will save about $160,000 per year using the five fuel-efficient 2006 El Dorado Aerotechs, which are set to hit the streets within a week.

Rivers Collegiate students will find it a little easier to make music — and more. Parents and teachers opened the school’s newly constructed band room and renovated vocational work shop with a little help from visiting Manitoba Education Minister Peter Bjornson earlier in the week. “This is an important commitment forth is school and the area at large,” Bjornson said after taking a tour of the school and its new $973,000 facilities.

TEN YEARS AGO

Of the six candidates vying to represent the Wheat City in the legislature, only Progressive Conservative Reg Helwer from Brandon West and Brandon East’s Drew Caldwell (NDP) showed up at the debate, hosted by the Brandon University Students’ Union and Canadian Federation of Students.

The Trudeau government began swimming against the tide of recent history Wednesday as it embarked on a long-awaited review on the future of the Canadian Armed Forces. An ambitious public consultation was announced, something the defence minister hopes will make the process “credible and relevant.”
