Looking Back

SIXTY YEARS AGO

The fire department was called to Barney’s Drive-In Restaurant at First Street North and the Trans-Canada Highway this evening when a grease fire in the kitchen fryer spread quickly up the ventilation ducts toward the roof of the building.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Souris River has risen rapidly in the last 24-hour period, breaking through a dike at Melita and destroying the historic swinging bridge at Souris. Higher-than-ever-before water levels carried tons of smashing, grinding ice into a direct attack on the bridge. Cables suspending Canada’s longest suspension bridge were snapped and the timbered remains dropped into the flooded river.

A shortage of nurses that plagued Manitoba hospitals last year has disappeared, and most job-hunting nurses are now finding that vacant positions are scarce, even in the north.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Military and Brandon school officials were on the hot seat when about 120 irate parents and students gathered to protest the planned busing to Brandon of 53 students now attending school at CFB Shilo.

Things heated up at Brandon City Council last night as critics and opponents debated the merits of the proposed smoking bylaw. The bylaw would replace a more lenient one that allowed restaurants to voluntarily establish no-smoking areas.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Construction workers are busy at Brandon University’s Clark Hall as restoration work forges ahead on the century-old structure and its attached neighbour, the Original Building. The $12.5-million project — which involves the steel-frame reconstruction of the heritage buildings’ interiors that were deemed unsafe — began in October and is scheduled for completion in two years.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Soldiers from the 26th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery marched through the streets of Brandon as part of a physical training exercise. They are getting ready for an upcoming exercise in Winnipeg dubbed Operation Charging Bison, which will help soldiers get accustomed to urban combat situations.

Sampson Engineering of Brandon has been given an environmental award from the Manitoba Pork Council for its contributions to the hog industry. The award, given during Manitoba Pork’s annual general meeting last Tuesday, recognizes the company’s development of a farm-scale anaerobic digestion system.

TEN YEARS AGO

NDP Leader Greg Selinger and Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari squared off in a relatively uneventful debate at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium on Thursday night. Topics such as health care, infrastructure, the disproportionate number of First Nations people in prison and the provincial deficit dominated the debate — between jabs about who wasn’t there. Progressive Conservative Leader Brian Pallister didn’t attend the debate, which was hosted by The Brandon Sun and Westman Communications Group. He did take part in the Brandon Chamber of Commerce’s debate earlier in the day.

John Quenneville likes what he sees from his Brandon Wheat Kings as they prepare for Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal playoff matchup against the Moose Jaw Warriors tonight. The 19-year-old Edmonton product, who was a New Jersey Devils first-round selection in 2014, said his team’s six-game victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings after they dropped the first two at home was good for the Wheat Kings.
