The Manitoba Flying Farmers held their annual meeting in Winnipeg, with 260 in attendance. Members chose Mrs. J.D. Wall of Brandon as queen of the Manitoba chapter of Flying Farmers and Mr. Wall as Flying Farmer of the Year.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Souris residents were struggling to contain the rapidly rising waters of the Souris River early this morning. Close to 200 people have been working around the clock, reinforcing dikes. About 75 troops from CFB Shilo have joined in the battle against what has been described as the worst flooding to hit Souris in recent history.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Wheat Board Minister Charlie Mayer has announced a 19 per cent drop in the price of spring wheat. A world surplus of grain and falling prices prompted the government to set the Canadian Wheat Board initial price for top grade wheat at $130 a tonne, down $30 from the current price.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The unique David Livingstone School in Brandon’s north end could be closed by this time next year. Brandon School Division trustees agreed last night to allow kindergarten to Grade 2 students eligible for David Livingstone to enrol at the newer Kirkcaldy Heights school further up toward the North Hill for the next school year.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Brandon is being invaded by alpacas this weekend as the inaugural Keystone Alpaca Classic takes place in the new barns at the Agricultural Centre of Excellence. The show features alpaca farmers and breeders from across the Prairies who bring their best animals to compete. Ten years ago, most people didn’t know what an alpaca was. But today, there are dozens of alpaca farmers in Manitoba, raising the odd-looking creatures and harvesting their unusually soft and warm fur.
TEN YEARS AGO
How do you make the most of a one-day trip to Walt Disney World? For eight-year-old Rachel Glidden, the top priority was meeting some of her favourite princess and cartoon heroes face-to-face. “Elsa and Cinderella and Rapunzel and Pooh Bear and Tigger and Tinkerbell and Mickey,” Rachel said, rattling off the characters she met on Wednesday during her whirlwind day trip to Disney World with national children’s charity Dreams Take Flight.
The Brandon Wheat Kings fought back from one-goal deficits three times and Tanner Kaspick’s short-handed marker proved to be the winner as they downed the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-3 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series at Westman Place on Friday. Kaspick’s goal with 6:39 left in the third period gave Brandon its first lead of the game.
