The worst flooding along the Souris River since 1904 has forced the evacuation of 50 homes in Souris, broken dikes in Melita and is endangering water and sewage systems in both towns.
Clifford Sifton, 82, lawyer, sportsman and head of a communications empire, died early today. Mr. Sifton, one of five sons of Sir Clifford Sifton, Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s minister of the interior, owned two newspapers on the Prairies — the Regina Leader-Post and the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.

An ordinary trip to a convenience store turned two Brandon men into heroes for the day. Brandon Police Service honoured Paul Houtstra and Vaughn Lessard in a ceremony after they foiled a robbery at the Mac’s store last month.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
This weekend, local teen Collette Hyshka will be very busy. The 17-year-old Ukrainian dancer is presenting seven dances in the biannual Ukrainian Dance Competition, titled 2006 Steppes to Ukraine, at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. Also, she will be watching from the sidelines as her students compete against other groups from Saskatchewan, South Dakota and various parts of Manitoba.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Progressive Conservatives may be riding high in the polls less than two weeks before the election, but most Manitobans don’t trust party leader Brian Pallister. A Winnipeg Free Press/CTV telephone poll of 1,000 Manitobans conducted by Probe Research from March 28 to April 4 found only 33 per cent of Manitobans trust the Tory leader. But that’s not unique — Manitobans polled don’t trust the other leaders, either. The poll found 22 per cent of those polled trust NDP Leader Greg Selinger, while only 12 per cent trust Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari.
Manitoba RCMP said on Friday they had laid more attempted murder charges against Guido Amsel for allegedly setting off an explosion at his ex-wife’s home about 18 months before the letter bombs. Amsel was already in custody on charges of attempted murder in relation to the explosive letters sent last July. Two of the letters were safely detonated, but one exploded and severely injured lawyer Maria Mitousis, who had represented Amsel’s former wife in the couple’s divorce.
