Brandon’s city golf course will again become an 18-hole course, at least for this year, but operations for the year are still not known. City council agreed that the course will have 18 holes. Two holes were lost last August with the start of construction of the technical-vocational school at the north end of the golf course property.

Delton school district recently voted to consolidate with the Nesbitt school area. The school has been sold to the Delton community club and will be used as an entertainment centre for the area.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A one-month deadline extension has enabled Northern Plains Premium Beef to secure another 70,000 head of cattle for its producer-owned meat-packing plant. Cattle producers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and seven American states have pledged to provide the plant with 344,360 head of cattle each year, about 45,000 more than was needed for the project to be viable. The vacant Burns plant in Brandon is still among the sites being considered for a packing plant.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

City council bowed to public pressure last night and agreed to take another look at the controversial site for a new fire hall at the corner of First Street and Rosser Avenue East. The city will now seek a “second opinion” on the level of pollution at the site. The decision comes just weeks after the city decided to go ahead with cleaning up the site and starting construction of the new fire hall.

TEN YEARS AGO

Roughly 100 people filled the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium on Sunday to pay tribute to former Brandon East NDP MLA Len Evans. Throughout the two-hour memorial service, colleagues, friends and family shared stories about a proud democratic socialist, a dedicated family man and an avid accordionist. Joining the podium onstage was a table set with a flickering candle, a glass of red wine and an accordion waiting to be squeezed. Leonard Salusbury Evans was born in Transcona on Aug. 19, 1929, and passed away on Jan. 2, 2016, after suffering a heart attack.

Rank-and-file New Democrats handed Tom Mulcair another ballot-box drubbing Sunday, voting to replace him as leader less than six months after a devastating election loss that dashed the party’s dream of forming Canada’s first federal NDP government.
