Brandon motorist Alexander Malcolm, a driver with an impressive 27 years of accident-free driving, was selected the first winner of the chamber of commerce’s safe driving award.

Britain’s Julie Christie, rugged Lee Marvin and “The Sound of Music” won the top Oscars for best actress, actor and picture, respectively.

Water resources branch officials are warning of a new wave of water coming up the Souris River, caused by runoff along local tributaries like the Antler River. This morning, the height of the Souris River was 1,363.18 feet above sea level.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Hundreds of people turned out for Fraser Clark’s farm equipment and machinery auction about 24 kilometres northwest of Brandon, with more than 375 bidding cards issued. Clark, a former Brandon alderman, has been farming for the past 51 years and is now calling it quits.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Municipal politicians from the Russell-Roblin area are afraid fish stocks on the Lake of the Prairies have been killed off because of the province’s decision to drain the reservoir at the Shellmouth dam to an all-time low in an effort to avoid a repeat of last spring’s flood.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A giant bobblehead icon that used to peer into northbound traffic along 18th Street at College Avenue has been headnapped. “It’s got us all befuddled,” said Hair That Roxx salon owner Sandy Bessant. The 121-centimetre-tall head is entirely made of Styrofoam and enforced with metal on the inside. The head was secured onto a stand and was designed to wobble back and forth when the wind blew. It had been installed on top of the roof of the hair salon last fall.

TEN YEARS AGO

In a city where some of the world’s biggest stars draw huge audiences night after night, a group of Brandon University music students is taking up a five-day residency. The BU Big Band will be playing downtown Las Vegas next week, as the high-energy jazz ensemble meets with younger Las Vegas students at both a prestigious high school, the Las Vegas Arts Academy, and a creativity-based preschool and primary school, the 9th Bridge School. Together, they’ll perform at multiple events, including a large concert at Las Vegas’ noted Container Park.

Gang Green is about to play its first home game, but the roller derby squad has already been stuck with scheduling issues. Their schedule, which is still in flux, includes numerous competitive games, but most of them are outside of Westman. The Wheat City Roller Derby League representatives will head to a tournament in Saskatoon next month and are off to Wyoming in August. They also have a home date with the Winnipeg derby all-stars later in the season, which veteran Dawn Dolloff, nicknamed Jessica Albad, expects to be ultra competitive.
