Surgeons placed a new artificial heart in a man’s chest to rescue his own damaged heart, hoping for a breakthrough that may save thousands of lives.
Honoured on their retirement at the annual banquet of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen were A. Edward Res, Frederick Haverstock, Jack Willdey, Robert Lane and G.E. (Pick) Coates. The five members of Lodge 394 represented a total of 216 years service with the CPR.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
More than 800 people attended funeral services today at Central United Church in Brandon for the late Earl McKellar, Progressive Conservative MLA for Souris-Killarney.
The normally placid Plum Creek, which runs from Oak Lake into the Souris River, has turned into a torrent of water. The creek normally flows under Highway 2, one mile west of Souris, through a large culvert. Water has backed up from the culvert on the north side of the highway. The water is nine feet deep and 500 to 1,000 feet wide. West of the highway, Plum Creek is a mile wide.

Gas prices are soaring in Westman as oil prices jumped to a record US$72 a barrel. Motorists were stunned as fuel prices shot up to $109.9 at several local gas stations.
Veterans of Canada’s “forgotten war” were remembered and honoured during a dedication ceremony at CFB Shilo, which also marked the 55th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong. Korean War veterans and soldiers from the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, and the Canadian Forces Base/Area Support Unit Shilo helped dedicate the Korea Parade Square, formerly known as the G4 Parade Square, outside the 2PPCLI Kapyong Barracks.
TEN YEARS AGO
Premier-designate Brian Pallister say she will name a cabinet in two to three weeks and convene the legislature within three to four weeks. At a news conference Wednesday, Pallister also announced there would be a spring budget. He said the legislative session could last into the summer, but that would be determined in consultation with the opposition. The Fort Whyte MLA, who led his party to an historic 40-seat majority government on Tuesday, is putting together a transition team to work out an orderly transfer of power.
