A pledge for $15,000 was made today by the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. to the Brandon General Hospital building fund.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Alex Whyte of Rivers was awarded the Brandon Lions Club trophy for the ninth successive time since 1958 when his orchestra was the only one competing in the Brandon Music Festival.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Rescue workers searched today for more survivors of the earthquake that devastated northeast Italy and left at least 628 dead.

The Saskatchewan legislature gave final approval to a bill that will raise the minimum legal drinking age to 19 from 18.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The sale of Burns Meats Ltd. back to former owner Arthur Child has come as a relief to the union representing Brandon employees. Mr. Child bought the company only one year after selling it.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the first time Coca-Cola, the carbonated syrup concocted by John Pemberton, was served. It was served at Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta, Ga., according to official company accounts.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The marks are in and, according to the Brandon School Division, its students performed the same or better than the provincial average in English and math.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Two years after it was destroyed by fire, the Brandon Hills United Church is set to rise again. The temporarily homeless congregation gathered at the site of their former sanctuary for a Sunday service and a ceremonial sod-turning before the new church is built. “We remember gathering here two years ago … as we mourned the loss of our church building,” Rev. Margret Kristjansson said in a prayer yesterday as she stood in front of the spot where the historic building once stood. “Today, we give thanks for the new beginning. You have brought into being, as we prepare for the construction of our new church building.”

TEN YEARS AGO

Kristin Shukin was a member of Manitoba’s original provincial roller derby team two years ago. So too was Dawn Dolloff, even if she wasn’t officially on the squad. The two members of Gang Green will be strapping on their skates for the provincial team tonight — there was no team last year — when they take on Team Saskatchewan in Weyburn, Sask.

Conservative MPs have thwarted a bid to ensure that dying Liberal MP Mauril Belanger gets to realize his dream of a gender-neutral national anthem. Fellow Liberals, with the help of New Democrats, tried two procedural manoeuvres Friday to expedite passage of Belanger’s private member’s bill, which would change the second line of “O Canada” from “true patriot love, in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.” But Tory MPs blocked both.
