SIXTY YEARS AGO

Four principalships and two vice-principalships were decided at the regular meeting of the local elementary school trustees. Ernest Nolan will be principal at McLaren School; George Pavlin goes to Earl Haig; J.I. Bateman to David Livingstone; Peter Caryk to Earl Oxford. Jean Grant will become vice-principal at Earl Oxford, while Hilton Stewart goes to J.R. Reid.

Election fever is running high at Brandon Collegiate this week. Candidates running for the office of president are Cathie Wilton, Harvey Laluk and Colleen Fitz-Gerald. Joan Nadler, Alison Scott and Bill Pugh are vying for the vice-presidency.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

City council has given itself a raise. Aldermen increased their salaries to $4,500 a year from $4,200, and Mayor Elwood Gorrie’s salary was increased to $16,200 from $15,000 a year.

About 30 people were on hand today for the official opening of the Brandon city police station on Queens Avenue.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Industry Minister Sinclair Stevens resigned today after two weeks of raging controversy over a $2.6-million loan to his wife.

Stan’s IGA at 139 Victoria Ave. East is now open seven days a week, and owner Stan Phillips says the store will continue to open Sundays despite the fact he has been charged by police.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Audrey Gill, chapter manager of the Brandon and District Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, who has been associated with the society for more than 20 years, will be vacating the position as she is moving on with her family to Duncan, B.C.

A new election will be held for the position of chief at Sioux Valley Dakota Nation due to a number of serious violations in the way ballots were handled after the April 15 vote.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon’s outgoing police chief, Chief Richard Bruce — affectionately known as “The Professor” — was toasted and roasted by friends and colleagues gathered at city hall yesterday afternoon to wish him well in his retirement from the force. Insp. Harley Bryson will assume temporary command of the Brandon police until a permanent chief is found.

TEN YEARS AGO

Premier Brian Pallister says Manitobans should expect a provincial budget in a little over two weeks — once the new administration has a better understanding of the state of the province’s finances. He said while it’s common for incoming governments to say that things are worse than they thought they would be, it’s true of the financial situation the Progressive Conservatives are inheriting from the NDP.

Fallen CBC radio star Jian Ghomeshi apologized publicly Wednesday to a former colleague who had accused him of sexually assaulting her at work, but the woman savaged what he did to her and the broadcaster for enabling his lewd and offensive behaviour. Speaking out for the first time since the scandal erupted in 2014, Ghomeshi cleared his throat and read what a judge said was not an admission of guilt in tones that once earned him international accolades.
