Maynard Pritschau of Brandon captured the Manitoba light heavyweight wrestling championship by defeating Dave Piper of Winnipeg.
Carl Bjarnason, principal of McLaren School for the past two years, and teacher for some 15 years in schools in the city, has been appointed superintendent of city schools.

Alfred Saunderson, a member of St. John Ambulance for nearly 40 years, was presented this week with a “label” indicating 37 years in which he has passed re-examination in the corps.

Ed Jarvis, 48, a guidance counsellor at Vincent Massey High School for the past three years, has been appointed vice-principal of Neelin High School.

An explosion and fire that ripped through the 13th Street home of Fraser Morehouse caused more than $25,000 damage. No one was injured in the blaze, but the explosion sent Morehouse flying backwards from the kitchen to a front bedroom.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Tiffany Muckel and classmate Sacha Denboer, Grade 6 students at Betty Gibson School, will travel to Sherbrooke, Que., as part of a national exchange program designed to celebrate Canadian history. In conjunction with the Brandon Regional Heritage Fair being held later this month, students had the opportunity to enter their names into a random draw for the trip.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
More than $100,000 in unsolicited donations from across the country have poured into Minnedosa to help rebuild the United Church building that was destroyed by fire earlier this year. “We’re not officially doing any fundraising yet but we are getting donations,” Rev. Shawn Ankenmann said yesterday. The church has received nearly $110,000 so far, Ankenmann said. The money came from other churches, community groups and private individuals throughout Manitoba and Canada.
TEN YEARS AGO
One of Canada’s shining stars, Brandon’s very own James Ehnes, returns to his hometown for a Pro Series recital on Monday evening at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. Joining him will be his longtime colleague, pianist Andrew Armstrong. Together, they are touring Canada, celebrating Ehnes’ 40th birthday with his audiences.
Premier Brian Pallister reaffirmed a campaign promise to increase the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative during a visit to Brandon University on Friday. Pallister, who spoke at BU Foundation’s awards luncheon, met with business, municipal and educational stakeholders at a roundtable in the Louis Riel Room at the university.
