SIXTY YEARS AGO

A Brandon College professor of 25 years ago returns to Brandon to address the graduates of 1966. Prof. W. L. Morton has become one of the best-known Canadian historians, author of many books and executive editor of the multi-volume Centennial History of Canada.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Canada Games Society is waiting for a ski hill feasibility study before it asks the provincial government to develop Crown land in the Brandon Hills into a ski facility as part of a provincial park.

A number of young Brandon musicians were winners at the provincial music festival finals held in Winnipeg. Nancy Harrison, first in brass solo; Elizabeth Lupton, first in string solo; Louise Pauls, Josie Scaletta and Alison Ryles were winners in the instrumental ensemble category.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Blaine Moncur proved that good working habits do pay off when his smooth driving skills won him first place in the Brandon Transit Bus Rodeo.

The past and future were celebrated yesterday when 363 students graduated during Brandon University’s 75th annual Spring Convocation. For both the afternoon and morning convocations, BU Chancellor Stanley Knowles praised the graduates for their accomplishments and hard work.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Soldiers with the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery will be granted the Freedom of the City today in celebration of the Royal Canadian Artillery’s 125th anniversary.

Four-year-old Elliott Smith got a handshake from Judge Elizabeth Willcock after being sworn in as a Canadian citizen during a citizenship ceremony yesterday afternoon at the Keystone Centre. The young native of England joined 38 others in the service held in conjunction with the Heritage Foundation.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

No one was killed but the pilot of a small plane was injured when his aircraft crashed into a field southwest of Hartney yesterday afternoon. The crash happened at about 1 p.m. near the community of Lauder in the RM of Cameron. The plane, an Ayres S2R crop duster, “suffered an engine power loss” and dropped out of the sky, according to Eckhard Dittbrenner of the Transportation Safety Board.

TEN YEARS AGO

Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie is determined to “blow people’s minds” with a raucous Canadian tour in the wake of learning he has an incurable brain cancer, his managers said Tuesday as fans tried to digest the shocking announcement about the singer’s illness.

A 13-year-old boy was injured after being struck by a Brandon Transit bus near Riverheights School early Tuesday afternoon. The boy’s injuries appear to be “non-serious,” police said. The accident happened just short of a Route 20 stop on Centennial, near a walking path that intersects the street and links Riverheights to Imperial Crescent and Rosser Avenue.
