SIXTY YEARS AGO
The great-granddaughter of a Gladstone pioneer, Barbara Jean Broadfoot, has herself struck out on new frontiers since writing her final exams this spring at Brandon College. Miss Broadfoot, who captured no less than seven medals for academic excellence at the college commencement, is now employed by International Business Machines (IBM) in Winnipeg as a systems engineer.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Canada Safeway and its Brandon employees have reached a last-minute settlement, averting a strike scheduled for today, which would have closed both the company’s stores.
Lawyer and player agent Alan Eagleson says the chances of Bobby Orr returning to the Boston Bruins next year are “zero.” Orr becomes a free agent in June when his NHL contract expires.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Members of the Brandon Real Estate Board celebrated “the pride of ownership” themselves for a change when they officially opened their new office building at 907 Princess Ave. The purchase of the building from the Brandon Chamber of Commerce in March was the result of 10 years of planning by the board to open its own office.
Discussions have begun between Westman Lions Manor Inc. and the Brandon school board over a proposed purchase of Earl Haig School as a site for the Lions’ planned senior citizens complex.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Darren Arbour of Brandon will be spending two years in Uganda through Volunteer Services Overseas Canada. Arbour will participate as part of INSTEP — In-Service Secondary Teacher Education Project — the aim of which is to improve the effectiveness of secondary education in Uganda.
Drivers are going to pay steeper auto insurance rates to cover losses at the Manitoba Public Insurance Corp., the minister responsible for the Crown corporation said today.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
New Era’s school grounds were alive with music and dance yesterday as students and staff celebrated their first powwow. Traditional dancers came from across southern Manitoba, including Rolling River and Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, to be a part of the event. Percy Tacan drove a bus full of students from Sioux Valley, including his own nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Dilley’s Florist, located in the Rosser Mall at the corner of 15th Street and Rosser Avenue, has closed after more than 70 years in business. The doors to the business closed immediately following Mother’s Day to begin the process of cleaning up and moving out by the end of the month. Owner Don Dilley said there was a combination of reasons that led to his deciding to shut down.
TEN YEARS AGO
A collapse in investment income caused Manitoba Public Insurance to post a loss on operations last year. According to an unaudited financial statement tabled in the legislature on Thursday, MPI posted a $31.3-million operating loss for the year ended Feb. 29, a dramatic turnaround from the previous year’s $57.6-million profit.
Several months after being handed eviction notices, all 27 tenants of Minnedosa’s Townview Manor have found new places to live. However, some family members are wondering why the Manitoba Housing refurbishment project hasn’t gone to tender yet.
