SIXTY YEARS AGO

J.F. Mills, chairman and general manager of the Manitoba Telephone System, announced that a new building will house the automatic switching equipment when dial telephone service comes to Deloraine and district late in 1967.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Five Brandon businesses were wiped out early today in a major fire that destroyed one of the older buildings on Rosser Avenue. A fire ripped through the two-storey brick Robey Building, located between Eaton’s and the new Royal Bank building, on the 700 block of Rosser Avenue. The stubborn blaze, which had engulfed Johnston’s Drug Store in the centre of the building by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, destroyed the entire structure, including Narvey’s Men’s Wear, Agnew Surpass Shoes and North American Life Assurance.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Elders Eli Taylor and Emma Pratt, 101, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new $4.1-million school building at Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, marking the end of nearly two decades of struggle to regain control over the education of reserve children.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Molson Breweries is hoping to increase beer sales in the province with a made-in-Manitoba advertising campaign and a $2 rebate coupon in newspapers. Currently, the company is ranked second behind Labatt in terms of sales volume in the province. But Labatt closed its Winnipeg brewery earlier this month, and Molson is hoping beer drinkers will switch brands in support of the last remaining major brewery in the province.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon students will have their pick of the world’s leading universities, thanks to a new program. Neelin High School will be the first high school in Manitoba outside of Winnipeg to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The International Baccalaureate Organization has declared Neelin a World School, principal Greg Malazdrewicz announced during a ceremony at the school yesterday. It’s a chance for the Brandon School Division to measure its students against scholars around the globe, he added. The IBDP is a rigorous two-year liberal arts curriculum for Grade 11 and 12 students.

TEN YEARS AGO

Blue and gold robes and proud family members filled Brandon University’s Healthy Living Centre on Friday during the school’s annual convocation ceremonies. More than 500 students celebrated years of hard work and academic achievement during the morning and afternoon events. Canada’s 21st prime minister, Paul Martin, was also in attendance on Friday morning to receive an honorary doctorate of law degree.

A Winnipeg man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for running an escort agency where girls as young as 14 were given drugs and sold for sex. Darrell Ackman was found guilty in March of 14 charges, including living off the avails of prostitution.
