Manitoba motorists no longer need to have front licence plates.

Two elevators are to be built in Melita in 1956, in addition to an extensive program of new residential construction. The elevators will be ultra-modern structures, and will be built by the Woods Milling Co., and the United Grain Growers.

U.S. President Gerald Ford and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev signed a precedent-setting treaty yesterday that will open some Soviet nuclear test sites to American inspectors for the first time.

FORTY YEARS AGO

On Aug. 1, the price that the Canadian Wheat Board — the government export agency — will pay farmers for top-grade wheat will fall to $130 a tonne from the current price of $160. That’s the lowest wheat price offered by the board in seven years.

Trace Gaskin, a Harlem junior high school teacher, was in Brandon to participate in a two-day violence prevention workshop involving more than 100 Grade 9 to 11 Neelin High School students. She was one of several Alternatives to Violence Project facilitators from across Canada and the United States who are here to help students deal with violence.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

He was visibly shaken by emotion, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye during a speech made in his honour by Lt.-Gov. John Harvard. Brandon’s Brett Robinson, legally blind since he was a child, was presented the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award yesterday morning at Fairview Home — a personal care home where he has been volunteering for the past 12 years.

TEN YEARS AGO

A pizza teepee marked the start of Aboriginal Week at Meadows School on Friday. Trying to set an example for its students, the elementary school is showing support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations. According to principal Dave Lim, it is part of the school’s responsibility to teach youth to be accepting.

The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies have earned their place in the 2016 Memorial Cup final. Francis Perron had a goal and an assist as Rouyn-Noranda downed the host Red Deer Rebels 3-1 on Friday in the semifinal. The Huskies will play for their first-ever Memorial Cup crown and face the OHL champion London Knights, who went undefeated in the round robin en route to a direct berth into the title game, including a 3-1 win over Rouyn-Noranda.
