Brandon College announces the appointment of three new professors in the faculty of education for the academic year beginning in September — Dr. Henry Hutchinson as associate professor and Gorden Senoff and Doug Steeves as assistant professors.

Deloraine volunteer firemen managed to save the Manitoba Pool elevator on the outskirts of Deloraine when a fire started in one of the grain bins. About 1,200 bushels of grain were lost because of the fire.
Gerald Hackenschmidt, a student at Brandon University, has been appointed to the university’s board of governors for a one-year term.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Don Pottinger, 47-year-old vice-president and general manager of Simplot Chemical Co. Ltd., was officially sworn in as president of the 580-member Brandon Chamber of Commerce at the annual changeover luncheon.
Bill Moore, the fired president of McKenzie Seeds, was sentenced to 30 months in prison on three fraud convictions. Charles McEachern received a jail term of two years less a day on two fraud convictions and Louis Boisjoli was sentenced to 15 months in jail on one fraud conviction.

Brandon’s busiest street will soon feature two new bridges that will be protected from a flood of the century, Premier Gary Doer announced today. The catch? The new bridges on 18th Street won’t be ready until 2009, 12 months later than initially expected.
Five Manitoba First Nations want a cut of the province’s lucrative oil industry from wells they say are on traditional land. The chiefs of Manitoba’s five Dakota Nations issued a proclamation in a bid to secure millions of dollars for their 4,300 residents.
TEN YEARS AGO
A sea of rainbow flags, colourful outfits and supportive posters filled the courtyard in front of city hall on Saturday, ahead of Brandon Pride’s second-ever march for the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirited and queer community.
Seven months after it seemed it would become reality, the possibility of a mental health court for Brandon is being reviewed by the new Tory government. Manitoba Justice Minister and Attorney General Heather Stefanson says the initiative is under review as part of a larger look at restorative justice in the province.
