Manitoba drinkers began getting a greater selection of liquor this week, Manitoba Liquor Commission chairman N.E. Rodger said. He also announced that the price of Scotch, along with some liqueurs and French wines, has been increased. A 26-ounce bottle of Scotch now costs $6, an increase of 30 cents.

Clean Environment Commission scientists and engineers are seeking an explanation for the extensive fish kill in the Assiniboine River at the Spruce Woods Provincial Park area last weekend. Oxygen level readings in the water are down considerably.

Four horses were destroyed and two outriders taken to hospital last night following a spectacular crash in the second heat of the Calgary Stampede’s chuckwagon races.
After a 70-year recess, Edna Robson is back in the classroom. Robson, 92, graduated in 1916 with a degree in Home Economics from the Manitoba Agricultural College. This week, she’s one of 44 students participating in the Elderhostel program at Brandon University, an international program that gives people over 60 an opportunity to study non-credit courses.

The former president of the now-defunct Downtown Brandon Business Improvement Association says the organization’s leftover cash should be spent on the city’s 125th birthday celebrations next year. Mark Fawcett says the $48,000 left in the BIA’s bank account when it dissolved would do what it was originally intended to do — bring people to the core area — if it was spent on downtown events during the city’s 125th.
TEN YEARS AGO
For more than 120 years, the Souris Fair has been a tradition that happens rain or shine — and Saturday’s storm stood testament to that. The two-day event, whose crowd comes for the rodeo, 4-H beef show, and slo-pitch tournament, started Saturday despite darkening skies.
RCMP estimated 3,000 people attended Steinbach’s first-ever Pride march on Saturday, far higher than the anticipated 1,000. Police had to open a second street to accommodate everyone.
