Investors Group will move out of the city’s downtown and anchor a new office complex at the corner of 18th Street and Park Avenue. The soon-to-be constructed commercial centre, Park Avenue Plaza, will sit on the corner where Leech Printing operated for more than 40 years.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A shady, picturesque piece of land with a fantastic view of Dinsdale Park and the Assiniboine River could soon become one of Brandon’s most affordable places to live. What’s more, if all goes to plan, this one piece of property could one day yield dozens of other affordable homes and create jobs for several people with limited employment opportunities. The double lot at 15 Fifth St. North is the site of Brandon’s first community land trust after city council last Monday sold the lot to the Canadian Mental Health Association for $1. A new, modest-sized home will now be built on this vacant piece of land.
TEN YEARS AGO
A crowd of roughly 300 were present at Camp Hughes on Sunday for a ceremony that recognized the former training grounds as a national historic site. The 60-acre national heritage site hosts a 10-kilometre system of trenches that were used to train soldiers in the First World War. While the site had received its provincial designation as a site of significance in 1993, it took until 2012 to receive confirmation of its national designation.
The effort by the Brandon Folk, Music and Art Festival team to book bigger names but keep a sense of authenticity with local artists did not go unnoticed by this year’s crowd. While the festival’s headliners — Ron Sexsmith, Little Miss Higgins and the Winnipeg Five, and John K. Samson and the Winter Wheat — were all bigger acts and artists who the crowd looked forward to, audience members were equally impressed with the tweeners, or groups that entertained between.
