A request by the Brandon Transit Ltd. for an increased subsidy of seven-eighths of a cent per mile was rejected by city council.

The Canadian Development Corp. and the Manitoba government are partners in a $500,000 search for oil or gas in western Manitoba. Last Tuesday, a crew from Senco Drilling Company of Calgary went to work on the first of seven exploratory holes in Manitoba, four miles north of Waskada. Each hole costs $75,000 to $80,000 to drill.

The first Amish settlement in Canada outside Ontario is being built just south of Plumas. Amish men and women are now working on constructing what will be the settlement’s church. Plans are in place for 18 families to move into the area.
Nellie Connally, the last remaining survivor who was riding in U.S. President John Kennedy’s limousine when he was assassinated, has died, a family friend said Saturday. Connally was 87. The widow of former Texas governor John Connally died late Friday at Westminster Manor in Austin, said Julian Read, who served as the governor’s press secretary in the 1960s.
TEN YEARS AGO
A 31-year-old woman who breached her bail order by having crystal meth at the Brandon jail is going to spend a little more time there for that and other offences. Her lawyer told court that his client had been handed the drugs at a bad time, although for some reason jail staff only reported finding the drugs three days after she got there. The woman pleaded guilty on Thursday to breaching a prior court order by having the meth. She also admitted to four other breaches of probation, failing to attend court, and to having a stolen hoodie that was swiped during a break-in at a Swan River drug store in February.
Nolan Patrick sure wouldn’t have scripted his biggest hockey season this way. The Brandon Wheat Kings forward, widely considered a top candidate to be selected first at the National Hockey League draft next May, is recovering from sports hernia surgery in mid-July. He has skated four times under the careful supervision of assistant coach Aaron Rome, but otherwise isn’t ready to participate in training camp.
