Seldom straying from the fairways, Gary Prior carded an 81 at the Brandon Golf and Country Club to capture the Western Manitoba junior men’s golf title with a comfortable six-stroke margin over his nearest rival, Bob Chapman.
Fire destroyed a barn at the Rivers Fair Grounds this week. The building was used to store animals during Agricultural Society fairs.

“Jewelled wood,” as Bob Cassan calls the tabletops he is processing in his Rosser Avenue monument business, “works fresh from Arizona’s Rainbow Forest, part of the Petrified Forest National Park and just about 160 million years old.” For the first time in Canada, large surfaces of agatized wood are being processed — slabbed, refined and polished — into glorious lapidary rainbows, show pieces for luxury homes.

The dike at the Recreation Centre golf course will be raised to prevent any damage from a flood similar to the one this past spring. City council has approved an expenditure of $35,000 to match a grant received from the province to do the work, putting the total price tag at $70,000.

Two local heroes received a royal commendation at city hall last night for their life-saving efforts following a horrific multi-vehicle crash near Minnedosa three years ago. Kim Chicoine and Craig Smith were honoured by Mayor Dave Burgess, who presented them with a commendation for bravery on behalf of Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean.
TEN YEARS AGO
Motorcycle engines rumbled on the tarmac of the Gander International Airport Sunday as Canadians and Americans gathered to reflect on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and this small town’s unexpected connection to it. A group of motorcycles and emergency vehicles provided an escort for a piece of steel beam from the south tower of the World Trade Center that was presented at a ceremony at the airport. Many passenger flights were diverted to the Newfoundland airport after American airspace was closed in the wake of the attacks on New York and Washington.
