FIFTY YEARS AGO
Fifty-one cyclists pedalled their way from Rapid City to Brandon in the largest Brandon University Bike Rally ever held. Last year’s champion, Gerry Gradwell, repeated his win over the 20-mile course this year, while Patti Ringland of Rapid City was the first female to cross the finish line. Keith Buizer of the Brandon City Police was the first police officer to finish, and seven-year-old Gordon Garbutt of Rapid City was the youngest to complete the course.

Royal Insurance Company of Canada has paid out $1.6 million after fire destroyed the Central United Church. The congregation must raise at least $1 million more for a new church.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
Days before the 56-room Super 8 Motel on the Trans-Canada Highway opens its doors, partners behind the venture have already announced an expansion of the project. Crocus Lodge Inc. will begin construction on another 44 rooms in March, and the work should take between three and four months to complete.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Foreign doctors will receive more support from the province to ease the transition to working in rural Manitoba communities, Health Minister Dave Chomiak announced. The province introduced changes to the way foreign-trained doctors are assessed. Instead of simply writing an exam and doing an interview to determine their competency, doctors will complete a 12-week placement in a rural centre, followed by OVERSET FOLLOWS:an ongoing mentorship with an experienced local physician.
TEN YEARS AGO
Friends are remembering two Brandon men who died in an ATV crash on Saturday as the type of people who would go out of their way to help others. Ron Ladouceur, 59, and Al Chalifoux, 51, died after the RZR side-by-side Ladouceur was driving hit an approach approximately eight kilometres south of Shilo.
WestJet no longer offers flights between Brandon and Toronto, according to a press release from the City of Brandon. The flight from Brandon to Toronto, which had been taking off four times a week since the end of June, was originally billed as a seasonal opportunity set to end on Sept. 5. However, in July, a WestJet spokeswoman said the company decided to extend the route into the winter despite a slow start. Instead, the company changed course and as a result, WestJet’s last flight from Brandon to Toronto left earlier this month.
