SIXTY YEARS AGO
Electronic railroading officially came to Brandon yesterday. Centralized Traffic Control has been operating since mid-summer over the 450 miles of Canadian Pacific main lines between Swift Current, Sask., and Portage la Prairie and over sections of that line for several months. But completion of the control installation became official when Mayor S.A. Magnacca pushed a button on the control panel that opened a switch somewhere between Portage and Broadview, Sask.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Rossburn Elementary School’s Grade 8 class of 1975-76 have sold the truck they won in the Rossburn Lions Club rink renovation draw. The truck, the top prize offered in the draw, was put up for sale by tender early this fall. The winning bid for the truck came in at $3,025, which will now be used to renovate and modernize the Rossburn Memorial Arena.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Between Oct. 29 and Jan. 31, Canada Post will accept greeting cards bearing new 29-cent stamps instead of the 34-cent stamps normally required on greeting cards. However, mailers must use cards sold with new envelopes containing a pre-printed box in which they can tick off the appropriate postal code.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
With the deal being struck between the city and the Brandon Humane Society to have the operation moved from its present 16th Street North site to a parcel of land near 17th Street East and Patricia Avenue, the organization is in need of volunteers to help with the move.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
They brought their tax forms, banking statements, debit receipts, receipt books, even old magazines. The city’s first Community Shred proved popular yesterday as residents seized the chance to steer clear of identity theft and cleansed their homes of unwanted personal documents for free.
TEN YEARS AGO
A man who armed himself with a rifle and briefly held another man captive has been found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. In making the ruling in Brandon provincial court on Friday, Judge John Combs accepted the prior testimony of a forensic psychiatrist who examined the gunman.
Katy’s Kookies is putting Brandon on the food map. Katy Unruh took home the silver medal on Wednesday in the Great Manitoba Food Fight for her Chocolate Cherries Jubilee Naturally Lean Bar, a new kind of win for the pro figure athlete.
The Moose Jaw Warriors scored twice in the final three minutes and added the winner 29 seconds into overtime as they shocked the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 3-2 on Friday, as the two clubs opened their 2016-17 Western Hockey League seasons.
