SIXTY YEARS AGO
Canada’s 1966 apple crop is 13 per cent smaller than last year’s harvest, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics estimates.
The Reston district reverted to Central Standard Time yesterday. Brandon and Winnipeg and some other Manitoba towns will not return to standard time until Oct. 30, while many parts of the province went back on Sept. 11.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Howard Nixon, a Margaret-area farmer, will represent the NDP in the Nov. 2 provincial byelection in Souris-Killarney.
Taxi cab operators in Brandon will receive higher fares under a bylaw given first reading last night at city council. The bylaw would raise fares to $1.20 for the first one-sixth of a mile and 10 cents for each additional one-sixth of a mile. At present, cab fares are set at 90 cents for the first one-sixth of a mile and 10 cents for each thereafter.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The federal government finally came through with the federal money that farmers have been seeking as Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announced a compensation package worth about $1 billion.
Brandon industrial commissioner Reg Forbes has resigned and will direct a federal program aimed at helping farmers find new careers. He will go to work for Westarc Group Inc. of Brandon.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Seventy-two people will soon be recognized with a certificate presented by Manitoba Lt.-Gov. Yvon Dumont, for 100 blood donations to the Red Cross. Eight are from western Manitoba — seven from Brandon and one from Deloraine.
Pat O’Hara has introduced a mobile oil and lube service in the city. For about the average price of an oil change at most service stations, O’Hara will drive to your home or workplace and change the oil, grease the chassis and check fluid levels.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
East end Brandon residents are grumbling about big trucks rumbling past their doors, prompting a city councillor to call for changes to an eastern bypass. Coun. Errol Black (Riverview) wants city council to pressure the province to complete an eastern bypass that would ease truck traffic along First Street and Victoria Avenue East. The province started the project in the 1980s, Black said. “Here we are 20 years later, and the damn thing isn’t done,” Black said.
Westman museums have been left scrambling for new funding options since the federal Conservative government announced a $4.6-million cut from Canada’s Museum Assistance Program last week.
TEN YEARS AGO
The three people Brandon police arrested after they stopped a taxi Monday afternoon are allegedly connected to two shootings that had city residents on high alert last month. Brandon Police Service confirmed the three people apprehended when a taxi was stopped in the 100 block of 18th Street shortly before 5 p.m. Monday were arrested in connection to two weekend shootings — a downtown shooting on Sept. 24 and a home invasion in the east end followed by a nearby residence being punctured by 30 bullets the next day.
Three members of the Brandon Wheat Kings made the grade on Tuesday as NHL Central Scouting released its preliminary players to watch list. Centre Nolan Patrick, winger Stelio Mattheos and Czech defenceman Daniel Bukac all were mentioned as Central Scouting released its first list of the top prospects from North America and Europe.
