Municipal Government Minister Stan Struthers, the lead minister for Manitoba Hydro, wants you to help Manitoba Hydro improve its Power Smart energy conservation program.
"As Manitoba's population and economy continue to grow, we need a responsible and balanced approach to meet our growing demand for power," Struthers said today. "Ensuring we have reliable power and keeping rates among the lowest on the continent requires building more hydro generation while strengthening initiatives like Power Smart that conserve electricity."
Struthers said as part of the consultation process, he will host open houses in Winnipeg, Brandon and Flin Flon.
For details on open house times and locations, or to participate online, go to www.manitoba.ca/powersmart.
Submissions online will be accepted until Dec. 13. The province is also doing phone surveys.
Struthers said the results will help Hydro develop new Power Smart programs. Hydro offers 27 programs for homes and businesses through Power Smart.
The consultations come as Hydro has faced criticism from the Public Utilities Board that it isn’t doing enough to help Manitobans conserve energy at a time when the utility wants to add two more generating stations and new transmission lines to the provincial grid.
The province says Power Smart incentives since 1999 have saved more than 545 megawatts, or the amount of electricity generated by 2.5 Wuskwatim dams.
