Some roads and trails are closed in Riding Mountain National Park, as high winds fan a wildfire in the Mukrat Creek area. Nearby landowners are under an evacuation alert, as helicopters and bulldozers have been brought in to fight the blaze.
Parks Canada says that fireguards are being created along the park boundary to protect neighbours and their property. Firefighting crews from other parks have been called in to assist.
With public safety being called the top priority, large swaths of the popular park have been closed, including Highway 19, Lake Katherine Road and Rolling River Road. Also closed are the South Escarpment trails, Kinosao Trail, Cowan Lake Trail, Brûlé Trail, Muskrat Lake Trail, Grey Owl Trail, Arrowhead Trail and all the trails north of Highway 19 and Highway 10.
