Education issues will be front and centre at an all-candidates forum scheduled for April 12.
Brandon East, Brandon West and Spruce Woods provincial candidates have all been invited to take part in the event, hosted by Brandon School Division and Brandon Teachers’ Association.
"We believe that education … should also receive some front-burner attention. That’s why we felt that we would like to co-host this event again with the Brandon School Division," said BTA president Alison Johnston.
NDP candidates Linda Ross (Brandon West) and Drew Caldwell (Brandon East) have confirmed their attendance, as well as Progressive Conservative candidate for Brandon West, Reg Helwer. Spruce Woods candidates Cliff Cullen (PC) and Malcolm McKellar (Independent) will also take part.
Johnston said Brandon East Liberal candidate Vanessa Hamilton has shown interest; however, she has not yet confirmed.
Brandon East Conservative candidate Len Isleifson originally accepted the invitation, but then declined due to a scheduling conflict.
"We’re hoping that Vanessa will come, and we’re also hoping that Len will have an opportunity to look at his schedule and see if he can make arrangements to try and be in attendance," Johnston said.
Brandon University political scientist Kelly Saunders will serve as moderator. Questions will deal with a range of educational topics, some with more of a teacher/union slant, while others will have more of a divisional focus.
Major topics, such as the proposal for a new school in Brandon and an all-day, every-day kindergarten program, will likely be addressed. From a teacher standpoint, class size and class composition will likely be a focus.
"We’re really looking forward to it," Johnston said. "We’re hoping to have a good attendance, and … although it does have an educational slant to it, it is certainly open to the public."
The event will be held at the Victoria Inn Imperial Ballroom at 8 p.m.
