SIXTY YEARS AGO

Prominent Brandon athlete Orville Shaw made his debut today as the owner of Shaw’s Sporting Goods and Luggage on Princess Avenue, across from city hall in the former Watt’s Men’s Wear shop.

The horse will vanish within six months as a standard part of the training of Royal Canadian Mounted Police recruits, RCMP commissioner George B. McClellan has announced.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

An extensive search for three-year-old Randy Gould, which saw police and about 100 volunteers comb every nook and cranny of the Argyle Courts townhouses in the Brandon’s extreme southwest corner, ended when he was found in an old refrigerator in which he had been trapped for six hours.

FORTY YEARS AGO

A tanker truck overturned in Brandon’s east end this morning, spilling about 20 tonnes of liquid fertilizer down an embankment.

A plan to gradually cut out smoking at Brandon General Hospital over the next three years was kicked off in a small ceremony at the hospital.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

For the second year in a row, the Brandon Teachers’ Association accepted a collective agreement that contained no increases in salaries or allowances. About 150 members of the 500-member organization ratified the offer.

The federal government’s decision to retain the GST rebate for municipalities means the City of Brandon won’t be forced to hike taxes or cut expenditures to make up for the hundreds of thousands of dollars it receives annually.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

One of the City of Brandon’s senior managers has opted to retire early rather than see his job eliminated. Rich Gregoire, the firefighter who eventually become responsible for both the police and fire departments, has quit as general manager of protective services after he was officially served notice the city planned to cut his position. Yesterday was the last day for the 34-year veteran of the Brandon Fire Department.

Today is the big day for Zellers as the company opens the doors of its new prototype store in Shoppers Mall. The new store is more than 100,000 square feet and has a ’50s-style diner, Magicuts and several expanded departments — like the Neighbourhood Market and the Big Ticket department, which includes mattresses and major appliances.

TEN YEARS AGO

Brandon Wheat Kings forward John Quenneville said his team wasn’t nearly good enough in their 6-1 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds in Game 4 of the Western Hockey League final on Wednesday. Still, the Wheat Kings hold a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven series as they seek to have their name engraved on the Ed Chynoweth Cup for the third time in the franchise’s 49-year history.

Long-serving local heart specialist Dr. Michael Turabian was one of four Manitoba doctors who received a Canadian Medical Association honorary membership at the Doctors Manitoba annual general meeting earlier this month.
