Western Motors is growing with Brandon with its new showroom and sales office at 10th Street and Princess Avenue.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Park School at 15th Street and Lorne Avenue will be for sale, if the new Betty Gibson School is completed on time. The 179 students now at Park will abandon the old building for the new school on the site of the former Alexandra School at 12th Street and College Avenue. In addition, 205 students now attending McLaren School on Sixth Street will attend the new school.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Approximately 10 cm of snow fell in the first big snowfall of the season. The blast of winter found many motorists a little rusty in their winter driving skills, but no serious problems were reported.

Brandon teachers ended their contract stalemate by unanimously accepting a wage freeze.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

It’s about time that the provincial government paves a gravel section of the main road between Wawanesa and Shilo, according to Westman politicians. Minnedosa Progressive Conservative MLA Leanne Rowat said residents have been lobbying for years to get a nine-kilometre gravel stretch of Provincial Road 340 paved, like the rest of the route. Rowat presented a petition to the legislature on Nov. 7 urging Transportation Minister Ron Lemieux to consider paving that section of the road.

TEN YEARS AGO

A report released by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business claims that unsustainable spending growth cost Brandon residents $20.4 million over a six-year period. The lobby group says the City of Brandon’s increasing labour costs need to be reined in.

A series of attacks targeting young concert-goers and Parisians enjoying a Friday night out at popular nightspots killed at least 120 people in the deadliest violence to strike France since the Second World War. President Francois Hollande pledged that France would stand firm against what he called terrorism.

Alyssa Montgomery scored 20 points and grabbed eight boards to lead the Brandon University Bobcats to their first win of the Canada West conference women’s basketball season on Friday in Lethbridge. Kylee Howard added 16 points, Keisha Cox posted 15 and Amy Williams chipped in with nine points and 11 rebounds as the Bobcats (1-2) beat the host Pronghorns 83-63. It was the first game of the season for Lethbridge.
