A Shilo woman is $100,000 richer thanks to a lucky Western 649 ticket.
Kim Derkson won the prize in the Dec. 12 draw. It was the Extra add-on game that made her ticket the winner.
"I always get Extra entered," Derkson said in a Manitoba Lotteries press release. "I don’t want to be one of those people who don’t have the Extra!"
Derkson bought her $12 ticket at Canex Supermart in Shilo. She went back to check her ticket at the store last Sunday.
"When I got up to the counter, the clerk said, ‘You need to sign it,’ and I said, ‘OK, but it’s not going to be a winner anyway," Derkson said, with a laugh. When the clerk scanned the ticket, the customer display unit flashed and the clerk told Derkson she had won.
"I thought maybe $10, but then I looked at the screen and it said I was a big winner. I was shocked."
Her ticket matched the last six digits for that draw to win the game’s second prize.
Derkson plans to pay some bills and put some of her winnings away for a special family vacation.
"Taking the kids to Disney World without having to save for it is great!" Derkson said.
