The month of May will be a busy one, as the city hopes that citizens will pitch in for a Brandon-wide cleanup.
City staff are promoting at least three events this month, as well as preparing for a corporate cleaning challenge.
First up, on Saturday, May 12, is Operation Clean Sweep. Then, on May 14 and 15, is a Keystone cleanup event. And Brandon residents with too much stuff can pile it on curbs for a giveaway weekend on May 26 and 27.
Organized by the UCT and a Students in Free Enterprise group, Operation Clean Sweep will take place next Saturday throughout Brandon. The city has been divided into 11 sections and a variety of student and non-profit groups will be helping to clean up the streets of Brandon.
To celebrate this event, a barbecue will be held after to thank all the volunteers for their hard work.
In conjunction with the cleanup, SIFE Brandon will have its grand opening of their Green Futures Urban Farm. Members have been working for the past two years to complete the project, which features 85 raised garden beds.
Then, on Monday and Tuesday, May 14 and 15, volunteers from COR Enterprise will be collecting garbage on the grounds at Westman Communications Group Place.
And for the final weekend of the month, the city is planning a curbside giveaway weekend on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27.
Instead of putting unwanted stuff in the garbage, residents can set them out at the curb that weekend. People are encouraged to tour the neighbourhood, looking for items that someone else may not way, but that they could use.
If you have items you’d like to give away, simple place them at the curb with a sticker or sign on them that says “Free.” Ensure any items that you want to keep are away from your giveaway treasures or tucked away safely in your garage or in your yard. At the end of the day, bring any uncollected items back inside.
The city asks that everyone respect other people’s property, not walk on people’s lawns or gardens, take only the treasures marked free at the curb, and not discard previously picked-up treasures on another person’s lawn.
Leftover items must be removed from the curb by 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, or people risk a ticket.
Safety should also be a consideration when deciding which items to set out to the curb.
Health Canada advises that used children’s items such as baby walkers, yo-yo balls, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds, toys and other child-related items not be given away.
