Join the Friends of Spruce Woods and the park interpreters this weekend for a special three-day event featuring local artists who have been inspired by the Spruce Woods area.
Enjoy a presentation by each artist at the Park Centre Amphitheatre and take a tour of their displayed art work in the Interpretive Workshop at the Park Centre.
Here are the presentations and activities in a nutshell:
The artists of Spruce Woods
• Today, 7 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Join the park interpreter for a look back at past naturalists and artists of the Spruce Woods area, including Ernest Thompson Seton and Norman Criddle, and then be introduced to our feature artists this weekend in the park.
John Whiteway — Spirit Sands movie
• Today, 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m.
Whiteway originally filmed his famous Spirit Sands film in 1993, and it has been seen by thousands of park visitors over the past 20 years. Join us for his insights into the park, then sit back and relax as we show his feature film.
Muriel Hope — painter
• Saturday, 2 p.m.-3 p.m.
Hope has been painting the wildlife and landscapes of the Spruce Woods area for years. Come see how she has been inspired by the beauty of the park.
Peter Sawatzky — sculptor
• Saturday, 7 p.m.-8 p.m.
Sawatzky is a renowned naturalist and artist, who creates all sizes of bronze sculptures of a wide range of wild birds, animals and now humans. Enjoy a tour of his artwork after the presentation.
Crafty Campers Family Program
• Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Now it’s your turn to become the artist! Paint, draw, sculpt and design your own artwork from what has inspired you from your visit this week in Spruce Woods. The interpreters will provide the materials — you just bring your creative ideas.
Make a family discovery at the Spruce Woods Park Centre. The Park Centre Exhibit Building is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
For more details on the artists and presentation times, contact the Spruce Woods Senior Park Interpreter at 204-827-8850, by email ParkInterpretation@gov.mb.ca or visit manitobaparks.com.
Interpretive events are free for everyone to attend.
