Coun. Vanessa Hamilton (Riverview) will challenge two former Brandon city councillors for the Brandon East MLA seat in the 2016 provincial election.
On Wednesday morning, the Manitoba Liberal Party announced Hamilton will be their candidate.
“Vanessa is exactly the kind of candidate we were looking for in Brandon,” said Manitoba Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari in a press release. “She’s young, smart and motivated to move Manitoba forward. I am thrilled to have Vanessa join our ever improving team.”

Hamilton was elected city councillor last year, taking over the Riverview seat from Len Isleifson, who is the Brandon East Progressive Conservative candidate. The riding has been represented by NDP MLA Drew Caldwell since 1999. Prior to his provincial role, Caldwell served as Rosser ward councillor from 1992-1999.
Hamilton has switched party allegiances from NDP to Liberal. She is formerly the local NDP riding president.
“I believe in Rana and I trust the direction she’s taking the Manitoba Liberal Party,” Hamilton said. “I’m excited to work with a leader that is focused on ideas that will make the lives of Manitobans better. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a voice for Brandon East.”
