Funnel clouds that were seen over Dauphin on Monday afternoon never became a full-blown tornado but still accompanied very strong winds in the area, according to a meteorologist.

Environment Canada measured winds gusting to 104 kilometres per hour in the vicinity of the Parkland city, but no damage was reported, said Natalie Hasell, a warning preparedness meteorologist.

Posters on social media reported seeing funnel clouds form in the sky at approximately 3:30 p.m. Funnel clouds don’t become tornadoes until they touch the ground.

“There was a rotating column of air,” she said. “Clearly, people could see it. There didn’t seem to be any damage on the surface. Where we would consider full-fledged tornado … is where there is a clear connection between the base of the cloud and surface of the ground.”

The Rural Municipality of Dauphin was under a severe thunderstorm warning on Monday afternoon, including Sifton and Valley River.

While no damage was reported near Dauphin, some areas of southern Manitoba in the Red River Valley saw buildings damaged by the same weather conditions, Hasell said.

The storm dropped approximately 60 millimetres of rain on Steinbach. Funnel clouds were also seen near Letellier.
