Brandon city council voted unanimously Monday night to pass the third and final reading of a zoning bylaw that will pave the way for the creation of a new K-12 school under the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine.

According to the agenda notes for Monday’s regular meeting, the bylaw (No. 7311) will allow members of Landmark Planning & Design Inc. to start developing a property located at 2210 Maryland Ave.

The bylaw was passed with virtually zero discussion between council members, since they’ve already had the opportunity to review the ins and outs of this project during a public hearing on Sept. 15 and second bylaw reading on Oct. 4.

Back in January of this year, Education Minister Cliff Cullen announced that the government would be setting aside $24 million for seven future land acquisition projects, which include two new school sites in the Brandon area.

Cullen stated that these projects involve a K-8 and a K-12 facility, with the latter being a school under the jurisdiction of the DSFM.

This update came as a pleasant surprise to DSFM Supt. Alain Laberge, who told the Sun after Cullen’s announcement that he and his colleagues have been working back-and-forth with the Manitoba government for years to get this project off the ground.

Brandon-area francophone families who want to enrol their children in a DSFM school only have the option of sending them to École La Source, which is located roughly 30 kilometres outside of town at CFB Shilo.

With a new centralized location secured at 2210 Maryland Ave., located near Landmark Cinemas, Laberge told the Sun earlier this month that his division is now in the design phase, which makes him very excited.

“It’s going well and we have high hopes that we can begin, in a year from now, to dig,” he said.

Monday’s agenda notes also highlighted the fact that 2210 Maryland Ave, was the former site of a landscaping company, which has been mostly empty since 2013-2014 outside of a fenced area that’s used to store inventory from nearby automobile dealerships.
