The nomination battle for the Manitoba NDP in Brandon East heated up Friday after one of the two candidates earned an endorsement.
UFCW 832, the union that represents workers at Brandon’s Maple Leaf Foods pork-processing plant, Brandon Community Options and other workplaces across Manitoba, issued a release on Friday stating that it is endorsing Lonnie Patterson for the nomination.
“Lonnie has a passion and deep understanding of the Westman region and is a long-time supporter of working families,” union president Jeff Traeger said in the release. “We believe she will listen and fight for our members in the Brandon area.”
There are currently two candidates vying for the nomination in the constituency, former city councillor Patterson and Glen Simard, a French immersion teacher and minor hockey coach. Patterson is also the party’s current president.
In the 2019 election, incumbent Progressive Conservative MLA Len Isleifson beat Patterson, running for the NDP, and Liberal candidate Kim Longstreet.
The constituency was an NDP stronghold from 1969 through 2016, until Isleifson defeated former NDP cabinet minister Drew Caldwell in 2016.
