A 24-year-old man is in custody after a traffic stop by Brandon police on Thursday turned into a drug bust that resulted in the seizure of about $240,000 worth of cocaine.
Song Huy Jeremy Le is facing nine Criminal Code charges, including cocaine trafficking, weapons offences and possession of property obtained by crime.
Around 8:10 p.m., officers stopped a vehicle at First Street North and the Trans-Canada Highway because of its windows, which police say were heavily tinted, contrary to the provisions of the vehicle equipment, safety and inspection regulation under the Highway Traffic Act.
While the officers were speaking with the male driver, they saw that he had cannabis in the middle console of the vehicle. He was arrested under the Provincial Offences Act for unlawful transportation of cannabis.
In searching the vehicle, police found three cellphones and a bundle of $50 bills, totalling $2,800. Within the hatch area where the spare tire was stored, they found three one-kilogram bricks of cocaine, which they say would have a street value of about $240,000 if sold at the gram level.
The vehicle was towed, and a further search found prepackaged baggies of cocaine, a loaded Glock handgun and an extended loaded magazine.
Le’s matter appeared in Brandon provincial court on Friday morning. His lawyer remanded the case to Monday to prepare for a bail hearing.
Police said Le is not from Brandon and that the vehicle he was driving was from Alberta and registered to him.
The 24-year-old was also given tickets for carrying liquor in a vehicle and unlawful transportation of cannabis.
