A court error resulted in a reduced sentence for a man who pleaded guilty to a string of vehicle thefts in Brandon provincial court late last month.

James Lepine, 30, pleaded guilty to possession of property obtained by crime, failing to attend court and multiple counts of possessing a motor vehicle obtained by crime. He was sentenced to one year in jail.

Due to a court administrative error, the sentence was partly based on one count of possessing a motor vehicle obtained by crime — but that charge had previously been stayed by a Winnipeg Crown prosecutor.

On Aug. 8 in Brandon court, Lepine’s sentence was adjusted to correct the error. He was sentenced to a nine-month term.
