The province will spend $4.8 million to improve roads around Neepawa’s new health centre, the Manitoba government announced Thursday.

The plan is to upgrade two sections of Provincial Trunk Highway 16 to improve access to the health centre in Neepawa and support the area’s growth, the government said in a news release.

“These improvements represent a critical investment in the future of Neepawa and the overall region,” Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard said in the release. “These road upgrades are an important part of making sure that the infrastructure keeps up with the growth of the community, with proposed designs targeting and prioritizing safety.”

The funding will go toward two projects.

The first is to extend Hamilton Street from Broadway Avenue and include a north-south access to PTH 16. The province is contributing $2 million from the Manitoba Growth, Renewal and Opportunities Program to assist the Town of Neepawa in funding the project.

The second project will complete connectivity to PTH 16, including a dedicated right-turn lane into Neepawa Health Centre and a right-turn cutoff out of the hospital, using the remaining $2.8 million. The project is expected to be completed by the fall, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor said.

Neepawa Health Centre’s new location, east of town, will upsize the hospital in several ways. It will increase the number of acute-care beds to 60 from 35 at the existing location, add three labour and delivery rooms, 10 more treatment bays in the emergency department and a hemodialysis program with nine new stations.

Naylor said safety is a priority as traffic flow is expected to increase.

“As the economic growth in Neepawa continues, it’s important that local residents can feel safe and secure as they interact with a growing number of vehicles on the road,” she said. “This infrastructure investment will ensure a high level of safety for all drivers.”

Simard noted the roads will also improve the connection to a new daycare, school, industrial park and Neepawa’s largest employer, HyLife Foods.

Neepawa Mayor Brian Hedley welcomed the investment, saying that he expects the projects to support economic development in the region.

The Manitoba GRO program is an application-based program that was launched in October 2024 as an element of Build One Manitoba. The program aims to support infrastructure projects that help communities grow and thrive, the province said.
