The province announced no additional COVID-19 deaths and 76 new cases of the virus on Tuesday, only one of which in Prairie Mountain Health.
At least one new B117 variant from the United Kingdom has also been identified, bringing the new total in Manitoba to five.
This revelation comes a day after the province tightened up its self-isolation guidelines for those who have come into contact with a known coronavirus case, lowering the threshold of prolonged contact from 15 minutes to 10 minutes.
Further, all close contacts will be required to self-isolate for a minimum of 14 days, regardless of testing results.
"To continue moving forward with our cautious approach — our slow reopening — we need to prevent the introduction and widespread transmission of the variants of concern," Manitoba chief public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said Monday. "We need to ensure we're aggressively managing cases and contacts."
No further information about the new B117 variant was released Tuesday.
Manitoba’s new COVID cases are as follows:
• seven cases in the Interlake–Eastern health region;
• 21 cases in the Northern health region;
• one case in the Prairie Mountain Health region;
• zero cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region; and
• 47 cases in the Winnipeg health region
The five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate currently sits at five per cent in the province and 4.3 per cent in Winnipeg.
Lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba since the beginning of the pandemic now total 31,551, with COVID-related deaths still sitting at 886.
Additionally, 12 people are in intensive care units with active COVID-19, as well as 21 people with the virus who are no longer infectious but continue to require critical care, for a total of 33 ICU patients.
