Sucks to be him.
A burglar who got caught trying to steal a pair of vacuum cleaners from a city store has pleaded guilty to break and enter.
"His plan was to steal vacuum cleaners to sell for money as he was going through a rough time," Crown attorney Grant Hughes said.
Shortly after midnight on May 12, a pair of police officers responded to a silent alarm triggered on an overhead door to the warehouse at the Sears store on 18th Street North.
They noted that a car was parked behind the building, and that a window was missing from the overhead door, which had pry marks on it.
Through a window, they could see a man, later identified as 53-year-old Donald Clinton Leask, on his hands and knees inside the building, pushing a pair of boxes very slowly.
When the audible alarm started to ring, the man stopped and sat motionless.
One of the officers was a handler with the K9 Unit. Upon being advised of the police dog on scene, the suspect surrendered and was arrested. The dog then searched the building, but there were no other suspects.
Leask, visibly drunk, was trying to steal a pair of vacuum cleaners worth $650 each.
Police also found the tools that Leask had collected to use in the burglary — a pair of crowbars, a flashlight, screwdrivers, multi-tools and gloves. He’d borrowed his getaway car.
Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta ordered a pre-sentence report, and Leask will be sentenced in mid August.
