There will be no Rock the Block or Crash the Courtyard event as part of this year’s Brandon University fall orientation.
"Consecutive years of organizing these events at a loss has meant that we’ve decided that the risk of organizing such a large-scale event is too substantial," BUSU president Justin Shannon said at a recent city council meeting.
"Therefore, the social being planned for September is on a much smaller scale, and we’re planning for a capacity of 400 people."
Dubbed the "Out of This World" social, the space-themed event will take place at BU’s Kavanaugh Courtyard.
"This year, we wanted to have an event that we thought we could make both very successful and viable in the long term if subsequent councils want to continue to do this type of event," Shannon said.
The last Crash the Courtyard event was held in 2016, and featured Thunder Bay, Ont., folk-electronic singer Coleman Hell. In 2015, the inaugural Crash the Courtyard featured Aaron Pritchett.
For many years prior to Crash the Courtyard, BUSU hosted Rock the Block, which shut down Rosser Avenue in downtown Brandon. Some of the bands featured over the years include Sam Roberts, Marianas Trench, State of Shock, Default, Bedouin Soundclash and The Sheepdogs, among others.
After last year’s hiatus, Shannon said BUSU is happy to present another event, even if it is of a smaller scale.
"We feel that this planned event fulfils an important role for students, in particular the many newcomers to Brandon, to meet and form connections with other students and community members," he said, adding that these connections will "enrich their university experience and benefit the Brandon community as a whole."
Earlier this week, Brandon City Council designated the fall orientation social a community event, which is necessary to allow for the sale of liquor. The event is slated to run from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets are available at the BUSU office.
