The City of Brandon cleaned up the former Greyhound bus terminal on Aug. 2, a week before the property owners said they would be sending in a crew of their own.
City of Brandon director of communications Allison Collins confirmed city crews were at the location on Aug. 2 to clear debris. The City of Brandon Planning & Buildings Department became aware of the issue after seeing a video posted on the People of Brandon Facebook group.
The cleanup coincided with the same day The Brandon Sun published a story on the debris in the dumpster area at the former Greyhound building and the owners’ plans to redevelop the former terminal. Mattresses, food and broken furniture were previously strewn about an enclosed area on the east side of the building.
Collins said the cost will be passed on to property owners via their property tax bill, but couldn’t say how much the cleanup actually cost.
"The property owner was aware of this work and was in agreement with the process. Moving forward, the department will work with the property owner to ensure that the property meets standards within the bylaw," she said in a statement.
There is still some garbage in the enclosed area, but the large items and debris seen last week were removed. A new lock and chain have been wrapped around the chain-link fence gate that previously allowed entry into the area.
Rijad Hadzic, one of the building’s new owners, previously told The Sun plans were in the works to redevelop the property at the corner of Rosser Avenue and Sixth Street. When reached on Wednesday afternoon, Hadzic declined to comment or provide further information on the city cleanup crews’ work at the site on Aug. 2.
The building has been vacant since Greyhound left nearly all of Western Canada at the end of October 2018. A land titles search shows that a numbered company, 10003653 Manitoba Ltd., which Hadzic is a part of, purchased the building on April 1, 2019.
While he declined to share details on the plans when reached last week, he called the opportunity "exciting."
