The Dauphin Herald, Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce, Westman Communications Group and the Brandon Sun are co-hosting a federal election candidates’ debate for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa Wed., Sept. 15.
The debate will be live-streamed starting at 7 p.m. on the Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page to accommodate candidates’ busy schedules and out of caution for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Later on, the debate will be rebroadcast on WCGtv, covered in the pages of the Brandon Sun and Dauphin Herald, and analyzed on the next day’s newscasts on 730 CKDM radio.
Brandon Sun columnist Deveryn Ross will moderate the 90-minute event with panellists consisting of James Blake from CKDM, Christian Laughland of the Dauphin Herald, Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce executive director Stephen Chychota and Brandon Sun political reporter Colin Slark.
Candidates will have 90 seconds to answer questions and other candidates will have 30 seconds for rebuttal. The original candidate will then get 30 seconds to say their final word. Each candidate will be given the chance to ask one other a direct question during the debate.
Five out of six candidates have confirmed their participation; Liberal candidate Kevin Carlson is unable to participate due to a work conflict.
The Sun attempted to organize a Brandon-Souris debate in participation with the Brandon Friendship Centre but only two of four candidates were able to attend and it was decided not to move forward.
