Brandon’s 109th Royal Manitoba Winter Fair is touting an entertainment lineup for the whole family alongside its equestrian competitions and agriculture exhibitions.
The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba released its lineup for the March 28 to April 2 event on Thursday, and visitors can expect some returning favourites as well as some new features.
"For the second year we’re doing our Royal Tea Party. Last year we tried it as something new and we had an overwhelming response," Provincial Ex general manager Ron Kristjansson said.
The tea party takes place on the fair’s opening day and features special guests Batman, Spider-Man and Captain America in addition to everyone’s favourite princesses. This is a separately ticketed event.
Other one-day-only events include an appearance by two animated friends for Toopy and Binoo’s Musical Playdate (March 30) and a performance by renowned children’s musician Fred Penner (March 31).
New this year is The Royal Stage in the Keystone Centre’s Manitoba Room where the fair’s trade show takes place. Local chef J.D. Braid will be hosting daily cooking demonstrations on the stage and Kristjansson says organizers are working on adding more presentations to the schedule.
Other daily entertainment includes performances by Mike D’Urzo, an award-winning magician and mentalist, and Team T and J, an uplifting family act.
As usual, Doodles the Clown will be putting on daily performances and wandering the Keystone Centre.
"You never know where you’ll find Doodles, he’s a mainstay ... He’s always been a family favourite and he just does a great job interacting with everybody," Kristjansson said.
The fair also is excited to welcome back the eight-horse hitch competition and mini chuckwagon races this year after a brief hiatus, Kristjansson said. The President’s Choice SuperDogs will also return for two daily shows.
