Two well-known Brandon sportsmen died today after long associations with local sports groups and lengthy careers in the business community. G.C. (Curly) MacKay was 84 and Herbert Stuart was 80.

Heavy snowfall and cold temperatures are threatening fish populations in lakes damaged by years of declining water levels.
Plans to send a brigade of ground troops to the Gulf have been drawn up by military, but only to ensure that the Canadian Forces are ready for any eventuality.

Four city council members will head to Banff, Alta., this spring for what is council’s most expensive trip annually. Mayor Reg Atkinson and councillors Rick Chrest, Beth Smale and Dave Burgess will attend the Federation of Canadian Municipalities annual convention from May 25-28. Council has approved an estimated expenditure of $10,662.88.
TEN YEARS AGO
With no cash left in its 2010 snow-clearing budget and many of its crew members away on holiday, activity by the city’s streets and roads department had to be noticeably scaled back over the past few weeks. But now — with a new, approximately $860,000 snow-clearing budget to work with and a full complement of staff back from Christmas holidays — the city can shift back into high gear and tackle the boulevards, medians and intersections where large mounds of snow have remained since being pushed there by plows after the pre-Christmas dump of snow.
A first-degree murder charge has been laid against an 18-year-old Roblin-area man in connection with the shooting death of Meagen Mancheese. The charge comes two months after 16-year-old Mancheese was shot at her family’s farmhouse near Roblin.
