On Tuesday, I attended the Ward 2 meeting at the Park Community Centre. I would encourage city council to get behind this project. After hearing the feedback from residents, it appears it has not been properly addressed. The request for proposals came in and it was just set aside with what seems like poor communication back to the community centre.
If council can’t justify increasing the spending to the $1.5 million, is there a way to commit the $1.2 million you were willing to spend earlier and challenge the community centre to fundraise the remaining amount? It felt like there was a real willingness among the group to do that.
I personally have no sentimental connection to the centre. However, as a resident and a real estate agent in Brandon, I believe that some of these community centres must remain. They are important gathering places for the neighbourhood, where people can build relationships and participate in shared activities.
By fostering a sense of community and providing access to resources, community centres contribute to the overall well-being of a neighbourhood. We have green spaces all over the city and can make more. Brandon needs more community centres, and the downtown needs all the help it can get if we ever hope to “revitalize it.”
