Opinion

End of an era

I enjoy Sound Off and always read it first when I open my Sun every morning. I like reading and considering others’ opinions, and especially did during the height of the pandemic. The anonymity of the segment has been attractive to people with good things to say, who would not normally make their voice heard. I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into culling and grammar-checking the submissions. Sound Off, being moderated by the Sun staff, is a better version of “social MAD-ia,” as I like to call it. I don’t envy the staff who have to wade through angry and divisive submissions. Thanks for your explanation regarding your decision to head in a new direction. Thirteen years is a great run.

Don’t stop now

Glad to see the province supporting some important initiatives and organizations in Brandon. While I think our elected officials spend too much time in Winnipeg, I appreciate the recent attention they’ve given to Brandon and the region — even if it’s because there’s an election on the horizon. The extra funding for Samaritan House’s shelter will hopefully move the community one step closer to reducing homelessness and the housing crisis. Now we need the city and the province to move faster on the sobering centre that is apparently in the works, so we can better tackle the drug and addictions crisis. If the Progressive Conservatives really want to earn some votes before the election, they should consider this their next move.
